Alcaidesa Links G.C.
The closest you’ll get to a links golf course in Andalucia, Alcaidesa
has heather and gorse but offers stunning views of the Rock of Gibraltar
and, beyond, the Atlas mountains of northern Morocco. Alcaidesa has been
modified considerably since opening in 1990 and after the settling-in
process has become one of the Costa del Sol’s most popular golf
courses. There is water, especially at the par-three second, and windswept
heights provide a stiff test to those wishing to keep on line. Fairways
are wide but somehow the closeness to the sky on your golf holiday encourages
that dreaded slice or vicious hook – or is it the sweeping nature
of the land?
Alcaidesa has a modest yet comfortable clubhouse building, which will be transformed
with the sc heduled completion of a second course, to be built by Dave Thomas,
in 2005.

Almenara G.C.
Almenara was designed by Dave Thomas and, in 2001, opened its third nine holes,
a spectacular layout built around a series of vast lakes requiring some of the most
breathtaking tee shots in Europe. With this third nine, Almenara offers the perfect
balance between its opening holes, which wind down then up through cork oaks, and
the second nine, which start high up before cutting down to the central lakes then
rising to the 18th green and the clubhouse.

Alhaurin G.C.
Alhaurin Golf took a while to get going but the golf course is now well
settled in and is proving popular with visitors on golfing holidays
and
residents. There is an 18-hole golf course designed by Seve Ballesteros
and a further 9-hole par-three course. The new clubhouse overlooks the
1st and 18th holes.

Añoreta G.C.
Añoreta Golf, the first course to be designed by Spanish Ryder Cup hero
JoseČ Maria Canizares, provides golfers with a good challenge in the
form of water hazards at no fewer than 11 of its holes.
Particularly tough are the 528-metre 3rd hole, despite its spectacular
views over the sea, the equally difficult 7th, the par four 8th with
its tricky dogleg and a lake to the right
of the fairway, and the unforgettable 17th hole where the green is surrounded
by water on three sides.
After its first three years Cabopino Golf, also the official custom-fitting
centre for Titleist and Cobra golf clubs, is rapidly becoming one of the
most sought after and most popular golf holiday destinations on
the Costa del Sol. Length: 5,976 metres Par: 72

Atalaya Old Course
First opened back in 1968, the Atalaya Old Course has featured various
revamps, including the reseeding of fairways with Bermuda grass. This
parkland golf course features wide fairways and fast elevated greens.
Eucalyptus, olive and pine trees grow along all the fairways, giving
pleasant shade in summer but meting out their own punishment for inaccurate
shots. Because of its tee positions, the Atalaya Old Course is suitable
for any kind of player.
If you happen to be an early riser on your golf holiday and manage to
tee off from the 10th hole before 9.00.a.m., you will be well rewarded
with a tasty cooked breakfast in the Swiss chalet style clubhouse when
coming in from the 18th. Practise facilities are excellent and include
a 60-bay driving range, chipping green, putting green and bunker practise
area.
Atalaya New Course
The views over the Mediterranean and La Concha Mountain are beautiful,
but don’t get too distracted. This is a challenging course. It
starts off deceptively, gently between the wide flat fairways of the
Atalaya Old Course, but things soon get more difficult as you head up
into the foothills. The return leg wanders down among the fairways of
the older course towards the chalet-style clubhouse. The Bermuda fairways
are lined with wildflowers, gorse bushes and lakes.

Baviera G.C.
This golf course, located in the Axarquia area to the east of Malaga,
in the municipality of Velez Malaga, opened a second nine holes last
year. Baviera Golf, designed by Jose Maria Canizares, is a flat golf
course, fairly easy except for the greens which are large with slopes
and swales. The fairways are very forgiving and without climbs or drops.
There are four lakes on the first nine, affecting the 3rd, 4th, and 5th
holes. The signature hole is the 4th, a par-five of some 500 metres where
two lakes come into play, one with an expanse of water covering 15,000
square metres and the other protecting entry to the green.

Cabopino G.C.
Open since April 2001 and perched among umbrella pines above the marina
of the same name, Cabopino Golf on the Costa de Sol is Marbella’s
12th Golf Course. Short but sweet is the way to describe Cabopino, which
offers three par-3’s, two par-5’s and 13 par-4’s in
its 5,170-metre layout. The course is irrigated with recycled water and
lakes affect play on the 12th , 13th , 14th and 15th holes. The golf
course offers a stiff challenge for higher handicap players who will
be rewarded as they use all the clubs in the bag. Low handicappers will
have to take risks if they want good results. The greens are large and
in excellent condition.
After its first three years Cabopino Golf, also the official custom-fitting
centre for Titleist and Cobra golf clubs, is rapidly becoming one of the most
sought after and most popular golf holiday destinations on the Costa del Sol.

El Paraiso G.C.
Reasonable rates, good management and a friendly atmosphere in this
traditional British-style golf club have made El Paraiso golf club an
extremely popular venue for players on a golf holiday. It was designed
by Gary Player and offers a challenge to players of all levels. The course,
set in the Paraiso Valley on the Costa del Sol and traversed by streams,
many of which are hidden, winds round two lakes and through hundreds
of trees. Heavy rough borders the wide fairways. The 6th hole is generally
regarded as the best on the golf course, a par-five dogleg left where
your drive must steer clear of two well-positioned bunkers, left and
right, and your second shot should be aimed to the left in order to avoid
landing in the lake. The green has two tiers.

Estepona G.C.
Estepona golf offers a round of golf in a magnificent setting on a demanding
course. The fairways, however, are wide and the greens are large so the
secret is probably not to be too ambitious. The design uses the natural
landscape set against the Sierra Bermeja mountains. There are views of
the Mediterranean from most holes.
The third hole, a taboggan-run of a par-5, is a daunting prospect with
the green way below and tantalisingly out of reach. A couple of hearty
blows should do the trick. The par-4 10th with its high tee offers braver
souls the option of going for the green 250 metres away. It’s all
downhill, curving to the left, and there’s water on both sides
of the green. Later you come to the par-3 14th where you are expected
to thread the needle uphill to a green nearly 200 metres across a ravine.
Every hole brings a new challenge. The clubhouse overlooks the 18th green
and beyond to the Mediterranean. Try the excellent cuisine or buy something
in the reasonably priced golf shop. Estepona is one of the Costa del
Sol’s most popular golf holiday courses.

Flamingos G.C.
Flamingos Golf club is situated in one of the most beautiful enclaves
of the Costa del Sol. From each of its 18 holes, designed by Antonio
Garrido, players enjoy breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea, Africa
and Gibraltar. The Arroyo del Taraje stream passes through Flamingos
Golf and ends in a lake which constitutes a natural border for the course
at the 1st and the 10th holes. The vegetation has been taken into consideration
right down to the smallest detail and each hole is defined by its own
trees. The most demanding golfer will find himself among cypresses, orange,
pine, carob, chestnut and pomegranate trees. From the clubhouse you will
be captured by the beauty of the views of the lake, the sea and the golf
course. The club also has a short par-3 golf course and a practise ground.

Guadalhorce G.C.
The front nine at the Guadalhorce golf course has a distinctively European
feel about it with its slightly rolling terrain and tricky greens, especially
the long green at the 4th. On the back nine the layout is more American
in style with lakes, tropical vegetation and raised greens. Throughout
the course many of the greens are extremely large and in some cases they
are shared between two holes, the 6th and 8th, for example, and also the
12th and 16th. Refreshments can be enjoyed by the practise ground near
the 7th and 9th greens.

La Cala North G.C.
La Cala North is one of the most difficult golf courses on the Costa
del Sol, located in mountainous and uneven terrain, the North Course
is – thanks to its characteristics – ideal for top competition.
Among the highlights are various elevated greens – American style – which
require special precision. Widely varied on each hole, the tees offer
different angles for the drive, although you can’t afford to relax
for one moment on this interesting and motivating course.
La Cala Resort has two 18-hole courses and another six-hole par-three layout.

La Cala South G.C.
The South Course at La Cala extends over sloping and spectacular terrain,
featuring incredible views – especially at the sixth, a dogleg
highlighted by a water hazard and elevated green. The fairways are wide,
and the greens also offer generous landing areas. However, many are elevated
above the fairway and require precision golf to secure an optimum position.
The 10th is rated the hardest par-five at La Cala, while a great deal
of care has to be taken at the 12th to avoid water defending the green.
Apart from two 18-hole courses, La Cala also has a six-hole par-three
layout and Golf Academy.
Par: 72
How to get there:
Turn off the highway at La Cala de Mijas and you will see a sign for the golf
course, which is about 6 kilometres away. There is also another way to get
there, from a road located between Mijas Golf and Alhaurin Golf.
